This Slate article first appeared a couple of months ago, but this blog wasn’t up and running at that time, and it’s worthy of a repost.

The article argues that society, from teachers to bosses, instinctively crush creativity because it represents risk:

  Studies show that teachers overwhelmingly discriminate against creative students, favoring their satisfier classmates who more readily follow directions and do what they’re told.

Even creative people whose solutions make things more effective and more efficient find themselves stymied at every turn, because in society’s eyes different is bad.
